Suffering is a painful equalizer that affects all of us at some point in our lives. We live in a broken world full of broken, hurting people.
Navigating the deep waters of suffering is an immense topic that I can’t even hope to touch on in a single article. Today, I just want to encourage you with some truths about God that you can cling to no matter what you might be facing.
These promises from lamentations 3 have been precious to me, especially over the last few months that I’ve struggled more with chronic pain.
Whatever trial you might be facing today, I hope that you find yourself encouraged by the character of our God.
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness”
Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV
1. His love never ceases.
The unchanging love of God is such a sweet promise to a hurting heart.
Being sick has led to a lot of uncertainty in my life. Although it is difficult, this uncertainty has made the enduring, unchanging love of God seem even more amazing to me.
No matter what uncertainties lie before you today, the love of God remains an unmovable constant that cannot be shaken.
God’s love transcends tragedy.
There is no pain that can change the love of God.
2. His mercies are new every morning.
During the time that I have been sick, this truth about God has become so incredibly precious to me.
The significance of God’s mercy being new every morning took on a new level of importance when pain forced me to live my life one day at a time— something I should have been doing all along.
I often wake up feeling so sick. I wake up in pain. I wake up feeling drained.
But God is there in the pain, ushering His mercy into my day no matter what I am going through.
He is there in my discouragement and in my pain, ready to encourage my heart. He is there in my weakness, able to carry me through when I can no longer carry myself.
His mercy meets me in my trials every morning, without fail.
There is no pain that cannot be touched by the mercy of God.
3. His faithfulness is great.
God is faithful.
None of these promises would matter if this wasn’t true. But it is.
God is faithful even when we are not. He always keeps His promises and never ever changes.
What a precious truth this is!
No matter what circumstances God sovereignly allows into your life, He will faithfully carry you through. His promises are sure when the rest of life is uncertain. He will remain. He is constant.
There is no pain that can vanquish the faithfulness of God.
Where is your hope?
God does not bow to your circumstances. These promises about His character will not fail you.
Claim these promises and preach them to yourself. Hold them close and know their value.
I hope that this encouraged your heart, and that you can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him”.
